The United Way Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Jasper & Newton Counties (SPSF) was established in 2006 as an initiative of United Way of Southwest Missouri to help impoverished single parents in our community.
The Jasper and Newton counties' area has a higher percentage of single parent families below poverty level than the national average. While a post-secondary education is one of the best weapons against poverty, most single parent families are headed by an individual with only a high school education.
UWSPSF enables single parents to attain self-sufficiency through post-secondary education. By providing a scholarship to meet a single parent's financial needs, individuals can improve the quality of their lives and their children's lives through higher education.
Scholarship money can be used for the following items:
- Tuition
- Books
- Utility bills
- Car maintenance
- Childcare
- Other financial needs
