Leadership Giving

The Pillars Club was founded in 1992 to recognize those individuals, families and family owned businesses that show a personal commitment in the mission of United Way. These leaders, by their generosity, are following in the tradition of our early community builders - whose vision confirmed the worthiness of making a personal investment in our community.

The 1992 Pillars Club consisted of approximately 50 individuals and families and has grown to over 260 in the 2005 campaign. Twenty original members are still leading by example and investing in United Way and the betterment of our community.

The United Way gratefully acknowledges, honors, and thanks these leaders for their willingness to build a brighter future for all the citizens of our diverse and ever-changing community.

Alexis de Tocqueville Society
In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville came to America and traveled throught the nation. As a result of his nine months of travels, he published a detailed study of American society and politics entitled Democracy in America.

Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America's heart.

Therefore, the name Alexis de Tocqueville Society was chosen because of Tocqueville's admiration for the spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good.
